When it comes to a past relationship and all of the greatness it once had, can it ever return?

We used to have a wonderful relationship, but a lot of things happened outside of the relationship, that were bad, and got brought into the relationship. We both still have very deep feelings for each other. But can it ever return to what it was. And if so what should I do to get it there?
