Is it safe...?

I am 18 and I live in the U.S. I have a Chinese friend (he is 17 and lives in China). Sometimes, we venture into political discussions in our private messages. Is it safe to do so? (China has internet censorship). I don't want anything to happen to him because we have controversial conversations.
